DataLab — Great Lakes Institute of Management: Privacy Policy

Introduction

This Privacy Notice explains what information DataLab — Great Lakes Institute of Management ("DataLab", "we", "us") collects through your use of the DataLab website and services, how we use that information, and your choices. By accessing or using DataLab, you acknowledge and accept the practices described here.

General

DataLab provides a gateway to publicly available datasets and links to external open-data sources. You can browse and follow dataset links without providing personal information. This notice describes the information collected automatically when you visit the site and the personal information you voluntarily provide (for example, when contacting us or contributing a dataset).

Non-Personal Information

When you visit DataLab, we automatically collect certain technical and usage information about your device and activity. This may include your IP address, browser type and version, operating system, referring URLs, pages visited, access times, and other diagnostic data. We use this data to operate, secure, and improve the site and to analyze trends and usage.

Cookies

We use cookies and similar technologies to provide and improve our services, remember preferences, authenticate sessions, and measure site usage. Cookies are small data files stored on your device. Most browsers accept cookies by default; you may change your browser settings to block cookies, but parts of the site may not function properly if you do.

Web Beacons and Similar Technologies

DataLab pages and communications (for example, emails) may include web beacons (small, single-pixel images) and similar technologies. These tools help us understand site traffic, measure the effectiveness of communications, and observe how users interact with content.

Third-Party Services and Advertising

We may use third-party services (such as analytics providers) that use cookies and other tracking technologies to collect non-personal information about your activities on our site and other sites. We may also allow third parties to serve content or advertising on our site. DataLab is not responsible for the practices of third parties; please review their privacy notices for details and opt-out options.

Heat Maps and Session Analytics

To improve usability, we may use heat-map and session-analysis tools that collect non-personal interaction data (for example, where users click and how far they scroll). These services help us optimize layout, navigation, and content.

Analytics

We use analytics tools to measure and understand usage patterns on DataLab (for example: number of visits, most-viewed dataset links, search terms). These services aggregate data and do not identify you personally to us. If you wish to opt out of specific third-party analytics, please consult the providers opt-out mechanisms.

Personal Information You Provide Voluntarily

Certain features require you to submit personal information. Examples include:

  • Contact/Inquiry forms (Name, Email, Phone (optional), Message).
  • Contributor/Submitter forms when donating or linking a dataset (Name, Email, Institution/Organization, Organization address (optional), dataset metadata, and any contributor comments).
  • Usage/purpose questionnaires (how you intend to use the data, whether you represent an individual or organization, organization name if applicable, and similar fields).

We use this information to respond to inquiries, attribute dataset contributions, maintain contributor records, and support the community. By submitting a dataset link or dataset metadata, you confirm you have the right to share the information and that it does not contain unauthorized personal data.

Dataset Contributions and Attribution

DataLab primarily hosts links to externally hosted open datasets. When you contribute a link or metadata, we will store contributor details to attribute the submission and to contact you about the submission if needed. DataLab does not assume ownership of contributed datasets; contributors retain responsibility for accuracy, rights, and licensing. We may require contributors to confirm licensing and attribution before listing.

No Hosting of Sensitive Personal Data

DataLab urges contributors not to submit datasets containing personally identifiable information (PII) or sensitive personal data unless appropriate consents and legal bases exist. If you believe a linked dataset contains PII or sensitive information, contact us and we will review and, if appropriate, remove the link or place warnings.

Links to Other Sites

DataLab links to third-party websites and external data repositories. These external sites have their own privacy practices, which may differ from ours. We are not responsible for the content or practices of third parties, and we encourage you to review their privacy policies before providing personal information.

How We Share Information

We may share aggregated, non-identifying usage statistics publicly or with partners to improve the service. We will not sell your personal information. We may disclose personal information if required by law, to protect rights and safety, or in connection with legal processes.

Security

We implement reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect personal information under our control. However, no security system is impenetrable — we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a security incident affects your personal information, we will follow applicable legal notification requirements and take steps to remediate.

Retention

We retain personal information only as long as necessary for the purposes described (for example, to respond to inquiries, maintain contributor records, comply with legal obligations, or as otherwise permitted). If you want your personal information removed from our systems, contact us (see below); we will evaluate, and honour requests as required by applicable law.

Children

DataLab is not intended for children under 16 (or a higher age where required by local law). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under that age. If we learn we have collected such information, we will take steps to delete it.
